A typical gummy contains a fraction of what a pea-sized portion of resin delivers, and the difference is hidden by labels that talk about "proprietary blends" instead of milligrams.

Read that "cost per milligram" row twice. It is the row nobody puts on a product page, and it is the row that decides value.


Why the dose gap is so large

Shilajit resin is, by definition, mostly shilajit. Purified resin is a concentrated substance — the sticky, tar-like material left after the raw exudate is filtered and the inert rock and plant matter is removed.

A gummy has to be a gummy first. Before any shilajit goes in, the format has already committed most of its mass to structure and palatability:

  • Gelling agent — gelatin or pectin, which gives it the chew
  • Sweetener — usually glucose syrup and cane sugar, often 2–4 g per gummy
  • Acid and flavour — citric acid plus a fruit flavour, specifically there to bury shilajit's bitterness
  • Colouring — because shilajit turns things a colour nobody wants to eat

Whatever is left is where the active ingredient goes. In practice, that is commonly 50–150 mg of shilajit extract per gummy, and sometimes far less. Compare that with the 300–500 mg in a pea-sized serving of resin — the amount most traditional-use guidance and most resin labels point to.

That gap is not a defect in gummies. It is arithmetic. You cannot put a bitter, tar-like concentrate into a sweet chew at high concentration and still have something people will eat twice.


The label problem

Two specific things make gummies hard to compare honestly.

"Proprietary blend"

Many shilajit gummies list a blend — shilajit plus ashwagandha, plus a vitamin or two — and give a single combined milligram figure for the whole blend. If a label says "Proprietary Adaptogen Blend, 500 mg," you have no way to know whether that is 400 mg of shilajit and 100 mg of everything else, or the reverse. Regulations permit this. It works in the seller's favour, not yours.

Extract ratios

"Shilajit extract" and "shilajit" are not interchangeable terms. An extract has been processed further and may be standardised to a particular fulvic acid content — or may simply be diluted with a carrier. Without a stated fulvic acid percentage, an extract figure tells you very little.

What to look for instead: a specific milligram amount for shilajit alone, and a stated fulvic acid percentage. If a gummy brand publishes both, it is competing on substance. If it publishes neither, the format is doing the marketing.


Where gummies genuinely win

It would be dishonest to pretend the resin is better in every respect. It is not.

Taste. Shilajit resin tastes strongly bitter and smoky — closer to burnt coffee grounds than to anything pleasant. A meaningful number of people try resin once, dislike it, and never take it again. A gummy that gets taken every day beats a jar of resin that sits unopened in a cupboard. Adherence is a real benefit, not a consolation prize.

Dosing precision. One gummy is one gummy. A "pea-sized amount" of resin is a genuinely vague instruction, and new users routinely take two or three times what they intended.

Portability. Resin needs a jar, a spoon and a glass of warm water. Gummies need a pocket.

No mess. Resin is sticky at room temperature and stickier in summer. This is a small thing until it happens on a work trip.

Where resin wins

Concentration. The central point, and it is not close. You are taking the substance itself rather than a small amount of it suspended in confectionery.

Verifiability. Resin is easier to sanity-check. Genuine purified resin dissolves fully in warm water into a dark, uniform liquid; it softens with warmth and stiffens when cold; it does not fizz or leave grit at the bottom. You cannot run any of those checks on a gummy — the format hides everything.

No sugar load. Four gummies a day at 3 g of sugar each is 12 g of added sugar you did not set out to consume. Over a year that is not trivial.

Cost per milligram. A $40 jar of 30 g resin at a 400 mg serving gives you 75 servings — a bit over 50 cents each. A $35 bottle of 60 gummies at 100 mg, taken two per day, gives you 30 days at roughly $1.17 per day for half the milligrams. On a per-milligram basis, resin is routinely four to six times better value.

Fewer things to react to. Resin is one ingredient. Gummies bring gelatin (not vegetarian), sugar alcohols in some "sugar-free" versions, and artificial colours.


What about capsules?

Capsules sit between the two, and they are the underrated option.

  • They carry more shilajit per serving than gummies — commonly 250–500 mg
  • They have no taste at all
  • They are as portable as gummies
  • They contain no sugar

The trade-off is that capsules hide the material just as effectively as gummies do. A powder inside an opaque capsule cannot be inspected, dissolved, or checked. You are relying entirely on the brand's testing.

  1. Take a pea-sized portion (roughly 300–500 mg) on the end of a clean spoon.
  2. Drop it into warm — not boiling — water, milk or tea. Around 40–50°C. Boiling water is unnecessary and hard on the compounds you paid for.
  3. Stir for 20–30 seconds until fully dissolved into a dark, even liquid.
